AI voice agents for business calls: a multilingual guide
How AI voice agents answer and make business calls in English, Hindi and other languages, what they handle well, and how to launch one safely.

An AI voice agent is software that answers or makes phone calls, understands what the caller says, replies in a natural voice and completes a narrow task such as qualifying a lead, booking an appointment or sending a reminder. Good voice agents say they are AI, work in the caller's language and hand difficult calls to a person.
This guide explains what voice agents handle well, which languages they work in, how many calls they can take and how to launch one without damaging the experience your customers already have.
What is an AI voice agent?
A voice agent combines three pieces of technology: speech recognition that turns the caller's words into text, a language model that decides what to say or do next using your knowledge base, and a natural-sounding voice that speaks the reply. Around these sit the business connections: your phone numbers, your CRM, your calendar and your WhatsApp account.
Unlike an old IVR menu ("press 1 for sales"), a voice agent lets callers say what they need in their own words and answers follow-up questions.
What kinds of calls can a voice agent handle?
- Inbound enquiries: answering common questions about services, prices, timings and locations, at any hour.
- Lead qualification: asking the questions your sales team needs answered and logging the replies in your CRM.
- Appointment booking: checking availability and confirming a slot, then sending a WhatsApp or SMS confirmation.
- Outbound follow-ups: calling back new leads, reminding customers about appointments or payments, and collecting feedback.
- Order and status updates: telling customers where their order or application stands.
Voice agents are weakest at open-ended complaints, negotiations and anything that needs empathy or authority. Those calls should go to a person.
Which languages can an AI voice agent speak?
Modern voice agents are not limited to English. At Clepto.in, English and Hindi are in production today, and we build and deploy voice agents in many other languages, including regional Indian languages and international ones, depending on where your callers are.
Real callers often switch languages mid-sentence, such as the Hinglish many Indian customers speak. Current models handle this far better than older systems, but accuracy still depends on accents, background noise, line quality and product names. That is why every language should be tested on real call recordings, not polished demos, before launch.
How many calls can a voice agent handle?
Far more than a single receptionist. Our largest voice deployment handles more than 250 inbound and 500 outbound calls a day, with around 20 calls running at the same time. Capacity is set by your phone line set-up and plan rather than by staff numbers, so busy periods don't create a queue.
How long does it take to launch a voice agent?
The first version can go live once your scripts, knowledge base and phone numbers are ready. Then plan for around 15 days of tuning on real conversations: reviewing transcripts, fixing misunderstood questions and refining when calls are handed to a person. Starting with a smaller pilot — one number, one call type — is the safest route before a full rollout.
What rules should an AI voice agent follow?
- Always disclose that it is AI. Our agents say so at the start of every call. They carry your brand, but never pretend to be a person.
- Hand over to a human. Callers who ask for a person, sound upset or raise something sensitive should be transferred or called back.
- Respect consent and privacy rules. Follow the calling, recording and data-protection rules that apply in each country you call.
- Log everything. Every call's transcript and outcome should land in your CRM, so your team can see what happened.
What does a real deployment look like?
For a medical tourism company, we built voice agents that answer and follow up patient enquiries in English and Hindi, connected to the company's CRM and WhatsApp. Patients get an answer straight away, and the team picks up conversations with the full history in front of them.
What affects the cost of an AI voice agent?
Pricing depends on a handful of drivers rather than a fixed package. The main ones are the number of call types the agent handles, how many languages it must speak, call volume and length (which drive telephony and AI usage costs), the systems it connects to — CRM, calendar, WhatsApp — and how much tuning and monitoring you want after launch. A pilot with one call type and one language is the most affordable way to prove the value before scaling. Ask for usage costs to be shown separately from the build, so you can see what you pay per call as volume grows.
How do you choose a voice AI provider?
Ask every provider these questions before you sign:
- Are the phone numbers, WhatsApp account and knowledge base on our own accounts?
- Will you test our languages on our real call recordings?
- How and when are calls handed to a person?
- Do transcripts and outcomes go into our CRM?
- What does tuning after launch include, and for how long?
